“The Savvy Brush Tray is the piece of studio equipment I didn't know I needed but now literally can't imagine living without. I have used oil dip in the past to maintain brushes but setting the brushes in a jar misshapes the bristles, and laying them flat gets the handles oily and sticky.
The Savvy tray fixes all of that and sets the brushes at the right angle so that they sit in the oil without bending the bristles while keeping the handles dry. It has enough capacity to hold a lot of brushes and looks amazing on the shelf while being relatively low profile. I seriously can't say enough good things about this tray and wish I had it twenty years ago!”

Shop NowAt its core, slip-casting is a technique that involves pouring liquid clay—known as “slip”—into a mold. The mold absorbs the water from the slip, causing a solid layer of clay to form along its interior. The result? A hollow, perfectly shaped object, ready to be finished and fired. It’s used to create anything from intricate sculptures to everyday objects like dishes and trays and… brush trays! But what makes this process so special is the level of detail and precision it offers, especially when paired with modern technology.
as is common with artists, I decided to create my own solution. I drew out my design, planning to make it out of wood in the time-honored tradition of crafted artists’ materials. I had visions of milling these out of a single block with a more designed, hand-carved look that still matched the dimensions and planes I wanted. However, after I began working with an industrial designer, it soon became clear that this was untenable from a both a cost and resources perspective. I considered almost every material, from plastics and resins to stamped/milled metal. We finally landed on ceramic, specifically, slip-cast porcelain.
We acknowledge that some unpleasant chores are simply part of the deal for many pursuits. But if there’s an alternative, why not embrace it? If, for once, the lazy solution is also a great solution, should we not celebrate!? The primary complaints: 1. Time commitment. In a world where time is an ever scarcer commodity—and this is especially true now that I am a parent—I simply do not want to devote 15-30 minutes at the end of each painting session to washing my brushes. It’s boring and I want to go have dinner with my family instead of standing in front of the sink trying not to splay my tiny rounds while getting through this task as quickly as possible.
