The Savvy Brush Tray* is an elegant brush-preservation system thoughtfully designed for the devoted oil painter. A quick wipe, rinse, and nestling the bushes into their wet-storage tray is all that’s required at the end of a studio day. The non-drying oil (questions about oil? Check our how-to and FAQ page) in the tray covers the brush tips and prevents paint from oxidizing in the bristles, while simultaneously conditioning them and helping to draw out additional pigment from deep between the bristles.

  • The sloped ramp is steep enough to prevent oil from creeping up the brush handles, but shallow enough that the brushes do not slide forward.
  • The removable, washable friction mat helps the brushes remain in place on the ramp and also raises the brushes slightly, preventing oil from creeping up the handles.
  • Though the brush tips should remain in the middle of the reservoir, sometimes studio life gets crazy. We get it. That’s why the front of the reservoir is gently curved to ensure that the delicate tips will not become bent (as they might when standing in a jar of oil) if they do slide forward.
  • The shape of the ramp allows the last inch of the brush handles to extend into the air, making them easy to grasp and remove.
  • The glazed porcelain construction is both beautiful and utilitarian, non-reactive to oil and odorless mineral spirits, and made to last for generations.
  • Gone are the days of spending half an hour at the sink after painting, carefully trying to preserve the shape of brushes both large and small. Just toss (well, gently place) them in the tray after painting. Cleanup takes only a few moments.
  • Best practices for use are simple and require nothing beyond what you already do in your studio. Step by step instructions are included with your tray and available here on the website.

Each Savvy Brush Tray comes with one Friction Mat, though replacement mats may be added to your order here

These unique ceramic objects are handmade by skilled artisans and have a beautiful, natural variation in finish: no two trays are exactly alike!

Like it but wish it was a material that will not break. Concerned with brushes soaking too much oil where bristles are attached to handle. Hope it’s not a problem. Love not washing brushes so often!

Thank you so much for your feedback, Sheryl!

After considering almost every material under the sun from wood to aluminum and copper to plastics, we settled on ceramic as the only truly enduring material that would still have a really high-quality feel and that 'of the earth' aspect that artists tend to enjoy. While we did look at molded plastics and resins, there was just too much of a concern about tiny amounts of solvent working their way into the plastic over the years (since brushes are rinsed in solvent before replacing them in the oil), and we couldn't be certain about the safety of such materials over years and decades. Porcelain is on-par with a standard dinner plate: long-lasting, but you're correct, it does need to be treated gently. Hence the custom shipping and stoarge box.

We've had brushes in oil continuously for 6-7 years at this point without any ill effects on the attachment point or glue. Our brushes are primarily high-end brands like Rosemary and Trekell with a few from Robert Simmons. Hopefully you have the same experience! They typically wear out from painting on linen first. ;)

A perfect size and slope angle for keeping long (and short) handle brushes well supported in the oil -- also a nice design and finish!

Thank you, Meghan! Great to hear that you've experimented with short handle brushes as well, and we're so glad you love the design.

Savvy Brush Tray

I received the Savvy brush tray a few weeks ago and already LOVE it! 💕 It looks great and has saved me so much time after painting sessions on tedious cleaning and my brushes look great! I’ve already recommended to so many artist friends!

Thank you, Rana! We are delighted to hear this. We're certainly in the business of saving time on chores...to be spent in the studio. :)
